StratoDevils Spring 2023 Overview

The Spring Payload is pursuing three science missions: ADCS (Attitude Determination Control System), LoRA radio communications, and seed module. The Spring 2023 team has three subsystems: Electrical, Mechanical, and Programming, along with two science directors.

The Results

Data Analysis

There were successes and failures to the Spring 2023 Payload.

Sensors

TMP36, VOC Sensor did not function as intended
GPS Sensor partially worked, recorded readings that were -π/2 radians off

Pressure and Accelerometer sensors worked
Heavy data losses due to lack of battery

ADCS

Successfully armed
Failed at stabilizing entire payload
Disarm protocol at 40,000 ft. failed
- Shortened overall battery life for other components

LoRA Radio

Successful communication established, was able to receive/transmit telemetry
- However, communication was unstable and receiving frequency decreased over time
  - Most likely due to weak antenna
  - Planning on a stronger antenna next payload to increase transmit power

Seed Module

Successfully mounted on payload
Germination rates between the control seeds and the shielded/unshielded seeds were not significant
- Longer flight might increase significance
Future modules should include better methods of attaching and containing the cuvette
- Quartz-crystal cuvettes could be used to permit more UV light to pass through
